San Diego 10News reports that the growing San Diego biotech industry is in need of employees. According to Biocom, 88 percent of biotech companies in the state of California are expected to hire new employees in the next year. Listings for local biotech jobs can be found on LinkedIn, SDBN, and company websites.
Quick Pitch Winner Developing Opioid Alternative
Last week, ten companies competed in The Tech Coast Angels’ Quick Pitch competition for $75,000 prize money provided by San Diego Venture Group and Cox Business. A panel of judges awarded NeuraLace Medical $50,000 for the company’s Axon Therapy technology targeting chronic nerve pain. Xconomy reports that NeuraLace has previously raised $2 million last year.
UCSD Researchers Use Machine Learning to Identify Antibiotic Resistance Genes
Researchers trained a machine learning algorithm using genome sequences from tuberculosis-causing bacteria that corresponded with antibiotic resistance. From these inputs, the algorithm provided a list of 57 genes and gene variants that could be linked to antibiotic resistance. Of this list, 33 were validated as known antibiotic resistance genes. Researchers will now further explore the other 24 to confirm if they do indeed confer antibiotic resistance and could be future drug targets
