Downtown Buzz: San Diego Is Doing Well—We Think

This week’s business and tech news from around downtown

Follow the Money

Most startup companies don’t realize that they might qualify for tax credits from the state of California if they expand their business in the state. On July 28, GO-Biz, County of San Diego, San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce and San Diego Regional EDC are hosting a workshop on the California Competes Tax Credit. Last round, San Diego companies received the most tax credits in the state, with fourteen companies receiving more than $7 million to expand operations in California.

Q2 Funding Report: San Diego Is Doing Well—We Think

Xconomy’s Bruce Bigelow works hard to sort through the confusion about the Q1 and Q2 venture numbers as reported in the Money Tree report by Price Waterhouse Coopers based on data from Thomson Reuters. Due to some late reporting and the confusion about the actual location of one company, it seems San Diego’s Q1 numbers had to be reduced—which in turn made our Q2 numbers look like a huge jump. You can follow the ups and downs here.

The Short of the Story

Local entrepreneur Kelly Abbot launched a new video this week to introduce his new venture Great Jones Street—a place where you can access a library of short stories. He took to Facebook to praise the San Diego startup community and tells the story of how the video came together. Set in the old library downtown, Abbot tells the personal story of how this new business came about. Check out the video here.

Future Technology

Futurism created an infographic of the top 10 emerging technologies of 2016. It includes topics such as the Internet of Nano-Things, open AI systems, organs on chips, and optogenetics. San Diego is well-positioned to continue the growth of many of these new technologies.

Another Ranking Shows San Diego Value

Pitchbook decided to take a look at some of the different cities being discussed as great startup hubs. Specifically, they looked at the multiple on invested capital and the number of exits. San Diego ranked in the top 10 for both.

The Startup Show now has all of the interviews from startup week available for viewing. Check out interviews with many startup leaders here.
