This App Streamlines San Diego’s Building Boom

Carlsbad’s Raken innovates a previously old-school part of the construction process

Judging by the number of construction cranes dotting the skyline, San Diego is growing, especially in the East Village (there are 25 projects planned for the neighborhood!). Some of these new landmarks are being built with the help of an app developed by a Carlsbad company.

Raken, created by Kyle Slager and Sergey Sundukovskiy, innovates a part of the construction industry that hadn’t changed in years: daily status report compilation. Typically, foremen and managers take notes on paper, fill out forms by hand or on old software, and scan—or even fax—documents. The app eliminates much of this paperwork and lets them create their daily report as they walk the job site.

The app was used in the construction of the posh Pendry Hotel, and the InterContinental Hotel that’s going up on Pacific Highway. Firms like Davis Reed and Hensel Phelps embraced the app, and the company just got $2 million in seed money.
