Innovation Takes Off at San Diego International Airport

The airport’s Innovation Lab is seeking ideas on improving parking and customer service

Calling all innovators. The San Diego County Regional Airport Authority is taking applications for the inaugural class of its Innovation Lab’s accelerator program. So if you have an idea on how to streamline the parking process at San Diego International Airport or cut the confusion that often comes with travel, speak up and apply by May 31.

“Successful innovations from the parking opportunity will add value to the airport parking experience to attract and retain customers,” said Airport Authority Director of Innovation and Small Business Development Rick Belliotti. “The customer service opportunity will pursue innovative solutions to reduce complexity and help people in whatever ways they need to more easily traverse the airport from curb to gate and vice versa.”

Why parking? Parking at Lindbergh Field brings in roughly $41 million a year, but ride-sharing services like Uber and Lyft are cutting into that, so airport officials are seeking ideas on how to “add value to the parking customer service experience and/or increase the efficiency of parking.”

On the customer service side, they want to help overwhelmed passengers or those with special needs or language barriers navigate the challenges that come with air travel. “In general, we want innovations that improve the airport experience for everyone,” Belliotti said. “Our driving goal is about enhancing customer satisfaction and the overall airport experience.”

Ideally, those applying for the accelerator program would already have prototypes close to being testable in an airport environment. Those selected will have 16 weeks to get ready to pitch their ideas with the hopes of getting a contract at San Diego International Airport, which saw 22 million passengers in 2017, or garner experience that would help them find opportunities in other airports—a $150 billion industry globally—or other high-traffic areas like malls and convention centers.

The airport’s 3,500-square-foot Innovation Lab took over the former commuter terminal, which was decommissioned three years ago. It’s run by a third-party operator, Detecon Innovation Institute, and still has all the airport terminal amenities, like a baggage claim carousel and ticket counter.

“San Diego International Airport is finding new ways to continue its role as an industry innovator,” Airport Authority President and CEO Kimberly J. Becker said. “We are very excited to see the Innovation Lab move towards developing real-world solutions to address existing challenges, as well as develop radical new concepts.”
