Biotech Briefing: Diversity in Health Research Participants Important to Find Cures

Plus: Vertex expands global research hub in San Diego, and BlueNalu launches to advance “cellular aquaculture”

Vertex Expands Global Research Hub in San Diego

Double the size, the expanded research site represents one of three global research hubs for Vertex.  The site is more than 70 percent lab and research space, and the remaining space includes a learning lab for STEAM education programs and a 4,000 square foot incubator suite for external collaborations. Overseen by Alexandria Real Estate, construction of the new building was completed on schedule in less than 18 months. Vertex has committed to a 16-year lease.

 

Editorial: Diversity in Health Research Participants Important to Find Cures

Two industry leaders write in The San Diego Union-Tribune about the importance of underrepresented minorities participating in the “All of Us Research Program.” Enrollment opened recently in the program, which is led by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Partner organizations around the country, including UC San Diego Health and the San Diego Blood Bank, are asking one million or more people to contribute a variety of their personal health and lifestyle information to a research database. The hope is that by tracking this data over time, patterns may emerge that could allow researchers to enable precision medicine and better tailor diagnostics, treatments, and prevention tools to individuals.

 

BlueNalu Launches to Advance “Cellular Aquaculture”

BlueNalu plans to use cellular aquaculture to “produce real seafood products directly from fish cells.” The goal is to provide a sustainable and safe alternative to farmed or wild-caught seafood from ocean and seas.
