This San Diego Company Is Making a More Eco-Friendly Hair Dryer

Volo is cooler, lighter, and rechargeable

Two years ago, engineer Jonathan Friedman and third-generation beauty supplier Ryan Goldman set out to bridge the gap between beauty and tech. They put their heads together and came up with an idea to shake up the beauty industry—a cordless, rechargeable hair dryer. They named it Volo, Italian for “flight.”

The problems with old-school dryers—they’re heavy, energy-inefficient, and can damage hair—stem from their heat source, which is similar to what’s used in a convection oven. They say the patent-pending Volo design addresses all of those issues by using infrared light—radiant heat similar to the sun.

“We have the perfect combination; we’ve engineered proper airflow and heat to where we’re drying quicker, but leaving the hair in a much better condition,” Goldman says.

Volo debuted to much fanfare at CES 2018. It’s available for preorder at $388 this summer through volobeauty.com and will ship this fall.
