Kit Pogliano to be First Female Dean of UC San Diego Division of Biological Sciences
UC San Diego’s national search ended with an internal nomination of Kit Pogliano, PhD, a distinguished faculty member since 1996. She was previously the section chair of Molecular Biology, director of the Microbial Sciences Graduate Research Initiative, and codirector of the UCSD Microbiome and Microbial Sciences Initiative. As dean, Dr. Pogliano will lead the Biological Sciences division in strategic goals, resource allocation, and professional faculty advancement.

The San Diego Union-Tribune reports that the seminar hosted by Biotech Vendor Services last month brought nearly 400 people together to discuss breaking gender barriers in science. Industry Mourns Loss of Award-Winning Journalist
Bruce Bigelow, editor of Xconomy San Diego, passed away suddenly late last month, leaving the community stunned by the unexpected loss. Bigelow won several awards, including a Pulitzer, for his in-depth reporting while at the Union-Tribune. The industry continues to mourn his loss. Those who would like to share remembrances of him can do so on a special website or at a memorial service planned for this Friday.
UC San Diego Opens Center to Fight Malaria and Other Tropical Parasites
Tropical parasites put hundreds of millions of people worldwide at risk for crippling and potentially fatal diseases. UC San Diego’s new center brings together faculty with different expertise in basic research, drug discovery, and preclinical testing to find new potential treatments for tropical parasitic diseases.
