Omniome Raises $60 Million for Faster, Cheaper DNA Sequencing

The series B financing was led by Decheng Capital and Hillhouse Capital Group, and joined by new investors Lam Research Capital and Nan Fung Life Sciences as well as current investors Arch Venture Partners, Domain Associates, Biomatics Capital Partners, and Altitude Life Science Ventures. Part of the financing will be used to advance Omniome’s trademarked Sequencing by Binding technology while “accelerating prototype development of commercially-impactful sequencing platforms.”

 

Scripps Research Finds New Way to Fight Cancer

Scientists at Scripps Research have published a study in Nature Communications describing Rad52, a protein that repairs certain types of damaged DNA that accumulate in some cancers. Inhibiting Rad52 could rob cancer cells of this particular repair mechanism and provide a new strategy to kill cancer cells, especially in triple-negative breast cancer, without harming healthy cells.

 

La Jolla Event Explains BRCA in Breast Cancer

BRCA was brought into the full limelight in 2013 when actress Angelina Jolie announced that she carried a mutation in the BRCA1 gene and had undergone a preventive double mastectomy to decrease her risk of developing breast cancer. At the Jewish Community Center in La Jolla, a panel of experts, including a patient advocate, convened to educate the community about testing for BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations and options for those who are positive.
