In late June, for the first time ever the FDA approved a pharmaceutical medication derived from the marijuana plant. Carlsbad-based Greenwich Biosciences’ Epidiolex is the first in a new class of antiepileptic drugs. It’s an oral solution containing a pure form of cannabidiol, or CBD, one of the plant’s non-psychoactive compounds. Epidiolex is approved for treating two severe forms of epilepsy, Lennox-Gastaut syndrome and Dravet syndrome, in patients ages two and older; this also makes it the first FDA-approved drug for treating Dravet syndrome, a rare genetic condition that can manifest very early in life.
