First came people-powered bikes and skateboards, then gyroscopic hoverboards, then shared electric bicycles and scooters appeared practically overnight. Now, San Diego-based InMotion USA is ushering in an era of electric unicycles, foldable scooters, and its latest endeavor, hovershoes. “It feels like rollerblading, except electric and self-balancing,” says CEO Rose Wang, who adds that it may be the first self-balancing vehicle so small it could fit in your luggage.
Wang, 26, took a special interest in transportation after experiencing the frustration of getting around Washington, DC. The serial entrepreneur got in touch with a cofounder of the original InMotion in China, and an international cohort came up with the Scooterboard, an e-scooter/skateboard hybrid.
InMotion USA has since introduced a bevy of other e-transport devices, and has teamed up with inventor of the e-unicycle, which has evolved over generations to go up to 25 mph and about 60 miles on a single charge. Wang describes the feeling of riding it like being “an evolved human being with a wheel instead of legs.”
