San Diego’s Best IPO Year Since 2014
This year was San Diego’s best year for companies seeking to “go public” with an initial public offering (IPO). Xconomy reports that seven local companies, six in life sciences and one in tech, collectively raised proceeds of about $427 million. According to data from Ernst & Young, in 2014, eight San Diego companies went public, collectively raising about $520 million. San Diego Business Journal reports that Crinetics and Synthorx lead the pack this year with IPOs that exceeded $100 million.
JMI Equity Raises $1.2 Billion Fund for Software Investments
Private equity firm JMI Equity, with offices in Baltimore and San Diego, raised $1.2 billion to close its ninth fund $1.2 billion. San Diego Business Journal reports that the fund, which was named after John Moores, who founded BMC Software and helped build cloud computing company ServiceNow, will primarily invest between $15 million and $100 million in “fast-growing software companies.” These companies typically have $10 million and $200 million in revenue.
UC San Diego to Partner with New Allen Institute for Immunology
Seeded by $125 million donation by the late Paul Allen, Microsoft co-founder and philanthropist, the goal of the new Allen Institute for Immunology is to improve human immune health and lay the groundwork for better ways to diagnose, treat and prevent immune-related diseases. To do so, the new institute is collaborating with University of California San Diego School of Medicine on rheumatoid arthritis research, to understand how the immune system of people at high risk changes before, during, and after disease development
