Wearable Weight Loss Technology Wins UC Entrepreneur Pitch Competition

The technology, called Modius, is a headset that “sends electrical pulses into the wearer’s brain to curb appetite and cravings,” according to Times of San Diego. Neurovalens, who makes Modius, won for the late-stage biotech category. Velox Biosystems, a digital clinical diagnostics startup, won for the early-stage category. Neurovalens and Modius were among nearly 150 business and startups from all 10 UC campuses that applied to the competition, and the companies each received $15,000 prize for winning their respective categories.

 

Q&A with Dwayne Roach of SDSU’s Viral Information Institute

Phage biologist, Dwayne Roach, Ph.D., joined SDSU last fall to chair the Viral Information Institute. In a Q&A, he describes his academic research path and his current work in phage therapy, which is currently used as a “compassionate therapy when a patient’s infection is unresponsive to traditional antibiotic therapy.”

 

Advance Biotech Grant Program Accepting Applications

Millipore Sigma’s 6th edition of their Advance Biotech Grant Program is now accepting applications from biotech start-ups in the U.S. and Canada. The grant will award $200,000 in bioprocessing products and services, including process development support, to companies with molecules under development. The deadline is March 31, and finalists will be announced in April.
