Almost 20 years after founding LJI’s Type 1 Diabetes Center, Dr. von Herrath has been named the world’s number-one expert on the disease. The ranking, from Expertscape, is a culmination of pioneering research and the development of treatments in tandem with pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk.
Type 1 diabetes is a chronic condition that begins very early in life and affects three million Americans. “What makes me get up every morning is a passion for having a real opportunity to do something about this disease,” says the German-born scientist, who during his rare downtime plays the violin and guitar to help him relax and focus his energies.
Even at this stage, von Herrath is looking forward to making new discoveries and breakthroughs. “We have worked for 20 years to create immunizations to redirect the immune system from attacking beta cells,” he says. “Now we’ve made an immunization that looks like it has the potential to prevent the disease altogether.”
