“Possible Fish?” San Diego Startup Looks to Create Lab-Grown Seafood

San Diego Startup BlueNalu is designing and growing fish meat in the lab.  Different from plant-based meat products, like the “Impossible Burger,” BlueNalu’s alternative seafood is grown from real fish cells. The fillets will be just muscle and fat, no bones, and it’s also being called “clean meat.” BlueNalu’s CEO tells The San Diego Union-Tribune, “(the fish) also don’t have the mercury, the parasites, the micro-plastics, nor the bacteria these things are usually covered in.”

 

Nature Ranks UCSD Ninth Best Biomedical Research Institute in the World

In Nature’s first worldwide ranking of biomedical institutes, UC San Diego ranked ninth among the list of 200. The Nature Index monitors and measures scientific output and collaboration, primarily through published work. The 2019 ranking took into account papers published from 2015 to 2018.  According to The San Diego Union-Tribune, “the institutions are rated on the number and quality of research papers submitted to more than 80 journals, including Nature, Science and Cell.”

 

BioClarity Raises $13 Million for Plant-Based Skincare Products

BioClarity, a part of Adigica Health, raised $13 million in the first closing of a new investment round. Prolog Ventures led the round, joined by existing, unnamed investors. In a company announcement, BioClarity says it will use the funding to “accelerate its grown through larger marketing initiatives and additional product innovation.” The company’s first product line is “Clear Skin Routine,” designed to treat acne. Other product lines include additional skincare routines, face masques, serum, body wash, and beauty supplement.
