Designing Smarter Labs with LabFellows

LabFellows provides software to research laboratories to automate and streamline ordering products and inventory management. The software can track products as they enter and exit the lab, which is especially important for regulated materials. David Lambert, managing partner at Right Side and investor in LabFellows, told The San Diego Union-Tribune that “They (LabFellows) have the potential to become the operating system of the life sciences lab space.”

 

SDSU’s “Death Star” Bacteria Could Inform Drug and Vaccine Delivery

Bacteria found in tubeworms that live on the bottom of boats in the San Diego Bay could be used to better deliver targeted drugs and vaccines. Researchers at SDSU found that these bacteria have special syringe structures that regulate the biological activity of their tubeworm host. These syringe structures are similar to those used by bacteriophages, viruses that infect bacteria. In a scientific publication, the researchers describe how the microscopic syringe structures could be modified to carry therapeutics or vaccines.

 

UC San Diego Center for Medicinal Cannabis Research Announces $3 Million in Grants

In a news statement from UCSD, the Center for Medical Cannabis has announced $3 million in research grants “to study the efficacy and safety of medical cannabis as both a supplementary or alternative treatment for schizophrenia, rheumatoid arthritis, insomnia, alcohol dependence and anxiety linked to anorexia.” The Center is the nation’s oldest research center for cannabis research. The five grants, funded by California Proposition 64, will go to five California-based research teams; the project topics are listed here.
