All the single ladies, brace yourself for this: A new study shows there’s a major gender gap in the real estate market, and that single women are priced out of renting an apartment in 48 of the 50 largest American cities. RentCafé, an online listing source for apartment rentals, completed the study by breaking down median incomes in the 50 largest cities by gender. Within these 50 cities, the average annual salary came out to $32,451 for men, $24,115 for women.
Based on this number, women can afford to rent an apartment alone in only two cities: Wichita and Tulsa. Men can afford to live alone in 18 cities, stretching from Las Vegas to Virginia Beach. According to the report, single women also can’t afford to buy a small home in Seattle, Sacramento, and Denver, whereas single men can.
Where does San Diego stand? It’s one of 14 cities where neither single men nor women can afford to rent or buy a place on their own.
