Newco Bloom Science Targets Epilepsy by Treating Gut Microbiome
Last week, biotech Bloom Science launched with the announcement of a Cell paper that shows a “causal link between seizure susceptibility and the microbiome.” The paper also identifies gut bacteria that confer anti-seizure effects. From this research, Bloom plans to treat seizures by developing neuroprotective therapeutics combined with a specific diet.

TSRI Graduates 26th Class of Doctoral Students
The graduates heard from many different speakers including Herbert Boyer, co-founder of Genentech, the world’s first biotech company. The theme of the speeches was to not only keep excitement for science alive, but also to find ways to overcome setbacks. TRSI’s president and CEO, Peter Schultz, Ph.D., said, “Think about your dreams, and don’t think about your doubts.”
Editorial: Diversity in the Biopharma Industry Makes Dollars and Sense
Helen Torley, CEO of Halozyme, writes in an editorial for STAT News that, “Championing inclusion is not about embracing mindless quotas or a covert liberal political agenda. It’s about broadening hiring searches and then broadening the perspectives of those at the table.” On top of that, businesses that are more diverse are more profitable, seeing the results in their bottom line.
