San Diego Startup Week 2016 Recap: Day 1

Mayor Faulconer kicked off the events at Horton Plaza Park

San Diego Startup Week kicked off on Monday with panel discussions, speakers, and a kick-off party at the Port Pavilion on the Broadway Pier. Here are a few tidbits from the day:

  • Mayor Kevin Faulconer helped get events started this morning with a news conference at Horton Plaza Park to welcome the attendees and tout San Diego as a startup hub.
  • The week-long event has grown consistently, by 100% since it started just four years ago.  This year’s registration numbers hit 2,500 and people are attending from 19 states and 15 countries.
  • By far the best-attended event of the first day was the evening’s kick-off party on the waterfront downtown. The smart bet was to pass up the banquet type food inside and head straight for the taco truck and pizza oven out on the deck. A random addition to the evening’s entertainment was an aerial silk performer (yes, that is what they are called — think Cirque de Soleil) who performed on a silk cloth hung from the lofty ceiling. The bar line was never too long and locally founded Suja Juice provided the non-alcoholic options. You could find just about anyone in the crowd — developers, funders, founders, recruiters, startup real estate experts, and interested students.
